6 Things You Can Make From Wood Pallets

If there is one item that has quietly gained a cult status as a low-cost source of craft material, it is the wooden pallet. From simple crafts to rustic chic furnishings to pallet parties, pallet upcycling has gone mainstream.

Wooden pallets are extremely functional in material handling applications, and the same theme holds true for their versatility in home project creations. In fact, most DIY users believe that the sky is the limit when it comes to reusing wooden pallets to create unique items.

Caution should be taken, however, when it comes to the safe handling of old wood pallets. Visibly soiled and dirty pallets pose the risk of infection if you you become cut by a dirty pallet or receive a puncture would from a wood splinter. Here are some of the things that can be made from wood pallets:

1. Furniture and Related Crafts

When I first started dismantling pallets many years ago, my first projects were chairs, specifically Cape Cod chairs and picnic tables for children. After I got my feet wet, I found myself getting a little more adventurous, branching into full size pieces and cabinets. 

2. Bedroom Furnishings

There are a number of things for your bedroom that can easily be made using wood pallets. Beds are obviously challenging projects to build. However, if you have the right skills, you can actually make beautiful looking beds using wood pallets. Other things that you can consider include decorative items, wooden chests, side tables, wooden shelves and drawers.

3. Pallet Lumber in Living Rooms

Use wood pallets for your living room to fabricate media consoles and coffee tables. Other popular items include center tables, book shelves and showpiece shelves. 

4. A Palette for Kitchens

A chest of drawers, cutlery racks and tables might be the most obvious things to make from wooden pallets for your kitchens. However, did you know that there are a number of things that might be simpler to make provide greater functionality? For example, a holder for your pots and pans, a wall hanging to store your knives and a free standing herb garden to store your herb plants are not only easy to make, but very attractive and practical as well.

5. Repurposing Pallets for Exterior Applications

The sky is the limit when it comes to designing and creating pallet-inspired works of art for your garden space and your outdoor areas.  One solid application is to utilize wood pallets to make a porch. Other options include wooden benches, wooden chairs, outdoor tables, wooden coolers, nameplates and street signs. You can also create a number of outdoor decorative items such as wooden wreaths using wood pallets.Seasonal decorations made from pallets can also be heartwarming, whether wooden jack-o-lantern art for Halloween, stylized wood Christmas trees, or flags to celebrate Independence Day.

6. Items for Dining Rooms

Your dining table and dining chairs might not be the most obvious choice when it comes to using wood pallets, but they are certainly a possibility.  You could also create a number of table decorations such as candle holders or salt and pepper holders.

What you plan to do with a wooden pallet is ultimately dependent on your particular passions, the time you have, your skill level and the woodworking equipment required. Recycled wooden pallets are like empty sheets of canvas. All you need to do is allow your creativity to flow.
