Valentine's Day Retail Display Ideas
Hanging Lanterns and Hearts
Visual merchandising plays a critical role in converting shoppers into buyers. There are several articles on this site to help you improve your visual merchandising. One of the most common practices is to follow the holidays celebrated by your customers. This idea can become tiresome pretty quickly for your customers - meaning you come up with lots of cheesy ideas for holidays - then your store's image is damaged.
Your store display ideas should reflect your brand. Balloons are a popular tool used in visual merchandising, but they give a "cheap" impression of your store. Hard to get someone to buy a $2,000 watch when the store is full of balloons. Balloons are more for younger environments and demographics like kids stores.
In my retail consulting career, many times we have used higher end visual merchandising ideas in our displays to create the ambience of "better" merchandise. The store was not carrying high-end merchandise, but the store felt like it was. Target has become the champion of this idea copying design ideas from fashion brands and making their own version of them for it's stores. When this idea was first implemented, they found it did not return the great success they hoped. The problem was the store's visual presence made the fashion items look cheap - like a knock off - versus a real design. It wasn't until they tweaked the visual of the stores with these new products that they started to see real results.
Visual does not have to cost a fortune. Just like Target copies the high-end brands, you can do the same in your store. A window display does not have to be original, it can be something you saw in a magazine or online. Remember, your customer is not seeing those other places you are so you still get all the credit. And there is no need to hire a professional visual merchandiser. You can use the talent in your store, especially if you are copying another display idea.
Pinterest and Instagram have become marvelous tools for looking for creative retail display ideas. These sites are packed with people "pinning" or sharing visual ideas they find amazing. What better ones to copy than ones already voted on by customers?
