When is Amazon Prime Day 2021?
Amazon Prime Day starts on Monday, June 21, and runs for 48 hours, ending at the end of the day on Tuesday, June 22. Sales start at 12 AM PDT on June 21, and end at 11:59 PM PDT on June 22.
What is Amazon Prime Day?
Amazon’s first Prime Day was held on July 15, 2015. Announced via press release just a few days prior, the retail giant envisioned the event as an observance of its 20th anniversary and held the promise of more deals than Black Friday.
Initially launched as a one-day shopping extravaganza, Amazon Prime Day has since expanded— no doubt in response to incredible sales numbers and high demand. In 2020 and 2019, the event ran for 48 hours, and in 2018 Prime Day deals ran for an impressive 36 hours.
Amazon Prime Day has turned into a retail holiday of sorts, and it is “observed” or “celebrated’ in 18 countries around the world, raking in billions of dollars in sales.
One thing to keep in mind is that you have to be a Prime member to participate, but you can sign up for a free 30-day Prime member trial as an alternative.
When Do Prime Day Deals Start?
Keep your ear to the ground because, in Prime Days past, members have been able to take advantage of sales a few days prior to the event's kick-off.
What Categories Are Best to Shop?
For Prime Day, Amazon slashes prices on items across myriad categories. Shoppers can always expect deep discounts on Amazon Echo and the brand's key products and proprietary electronics, including Amazon Fire Sticks, Fire Cubes, and, of course, Kindles.
According to a post-event press release last year, the top-selling categories for third-party sellers included bedding, wireless accessories, nutrition and wellness, arts, crafts and sewing, and health care.
What Will Be on Sale During Prime Day?
In the same press release, Amazon shared a comprehensive list of the event’s best-sellers from around the world. Bestsellers in the U.S. from the 2020 Prime Day include:
- iRobot Roomba Robot Vacuum
- MyQ Wireless & WiFi Enabled Smart Garage Door Opener
- LifeStraw Personal Water Filter
- Goli Apple Cider Vinegar Vitamins
- Kids Against Maturity: Card Game for Kids and Families
Customers also purchased millions of Alexa-compatible devices during the Prime Day event, and the Echo Dot was the most popular item purchased on Prime Day globally.
What About Shopping Locally?
For some business owners, there’s a certain lure to Amazon Prime Day, and many wait in anticipation. “Buying from a regular store is highly time-consuming when compared to online shopping. Moreover, you need to visit multiple stores to find the best deal for your needs," says Martin Orefice, the Founder of Rent To Own Labs. "The best thing about Amazon Prime Day is that you find all the attractive deals at one place, which cuts all the hassle of shopping. Plus, it helps you save valuable time and eliminate the problem of transportation. Amazon fulfills everything for you.”
And on the flip side, Amazon's “Support Small” program lets buyers choose products from local and small retailers. All you have to do is choose your region: Pacific, Rocky Mountains, Northeast, Southwest, Midwest, or Southeast. “For small businesses like ours, Amazon Prime Day is a way to not only buy office necessities at discounted prices but also to give one or more of us–local or small businesses—a boost in sales on one of the world’s largest shopping days," says Avner Brodsky, co-founder, and CEO of Superwatches.com.
Are There Other Stores That Have Prime Day?
As a result of Amazon Prime Day’s overwhelming success and not to be outdone, other retailers tend to announce their own blowouts that coincide with Prime Day. In the past, Target, Walmart, Best Buy, and Kohl’s have tossed their hats in the ring. In 2020, Wayfair slashed its prices on a slew of top-rated items to compete with Prime Day.
In addition to large retailers running their own sales, Prime members will also find specific brands and digital suites on sale within Amazon. For example, in 2020, Amazon ran sales on several packages of Adobe Creative Cloud.
